Tetris Celebrates 25 years

The Tetris, the game that from the mid-1980s began to build a legion of fans around the world, meets this week 25 years. Currently it is played in over 50 countries and is registered in the Guinness Book as the most popular video games in history. Today, Tetris is available in 59 platforms, including the iPhone and Wii, and is played over a million times a day in social network Facebook. It is not worth fighting phenomenon: the Tetris is addictive, and even to meet a quarter of a century, came to stay.

"Simply a good game, easy, understandable and easily exportable to new platforms, so it became so popular and I'm sure it will remain so," said the Spanish agency EFE the inventor of the game, the Russian engineer Alexey Pajitnov .

It started on 6 June 1984. Two weeks after having started to work, Pajitnov completed the first version of Tetris, despite the popularization of the game only have occurred since 1985, when it was adapted to begin to be played on personal computers and consoles. From there the popularity of the game has become unstoppable. Especially from when it was chosen to follow the Game Boy console, which quickly became one of the most widely sold throughout the world. Henk Rogers, designer of Nintendo was to launch the console when the guys took to the game at a convention in Las Vegas in 1988 and thought it was the ideal game to accompany the Game Boy. "The Tetris was very easy and was to create order from chaos, "Rogers explained to Reuters.

The game is very simple: players have to rotate and fit a number of pieces of different shape as they go by the screen at a constant speed. Once the parts accommodated in order to complete a horizontal line, it disappears, giving the player more space to play in facilitating the placement of new pieces, which continue to fall. The player loses when the pieces accumulate on the screen and reach the top.

The game's name derives from "tetra" (four), in reference to the number of squares that make each piece. "Although at the time of creation have felt had a great idea, I never would have imagined that this success", recognizes the creator of the game, 25 years later.

In future, the creator of Tetris and its commercial developer want to convert it in "virtual first sport in history" with "professional players, common rules and everything that involves a traditional sport," explained Pajitnov, a passion for games and virtual table, provided they have an intellectual. "We are preparing a world championship, with a standardized version of the game, said Rogers, whose idea is to call local evidence in 2010 and the following year, celebrate the" First World Championship of Tetris.
